Shabnum’s story
The 23 day old miracle baby

Ashans’s mother Shabnum had left him sleeping alongside his three sisters, aged 12, 8 and 5 when at 8.50am the earthquake struck – the house was demolished instantly, crushing them.
As rescuers fought to find the children, his three sisters were brought out and laid on the ground before their mother. In her grief the baby was forgotten until she heard his cries……

Syed Hussain’s story
Faimly support that knew no boundaries

Syed Hussain was repairing his windows, when he felt a trembling. As this became stronger, I ran in to his mother, who was in the next room reciting the Holy Koran. As he entered, the house collapsed on top of them.

His family managed to pull him out alive although he was in great pain in his back. His daughter and son sadly perished. Outside help reached the village three days later and it was immediately apparent given Syed’s condition that he could not be transported by vehicle over the terrible roads. His family began to discuss the possibility of carrying him out and so they fixed him as comfortably as they could on his makeshift charpoi stretcher. Four of them hoisted a corner leg each onto their shoulders and, incredibly, they set off straight down the hillside. They didn’t make for the road, which they knew was blocked anyway, but trusted to their intimate knowledge of the mountain paths. Due to their efforts Syed survived.
